Work + Grace = Works

[5:1] For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore,
and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. [2] Look: I,
Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will
be of no advantage to you. [3] I testify again to every man
who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the
whole law. [4] You are severed from Christ, you who would
be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.
[5] For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly
wait for the hope of righteousness. [6] For in Christ Jesus
neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything,
but only faith working through love.

(Galatians 5:1-6 ESV)
Mixing anything with grace is not grace. If we trust
Jesus Christ if we sin or not we are forgiven.
Jesus died for our sins and gave us his righteousness.
If we try to stop sinning we cannot do it. Rest in the
work Jesus Christ did for you on the cross. The
Holy Spirit will do there rest as long as we in
step with the Spirit.

    Paul,

Christ did die for our sins, past, present and future. Yet we are not to continue in sin so that grace may abound. (Romans 6:1- 11) Also see John 5:14 where Jesus told the man he had just healed, “do not sin any more, so that nothing worse may befall you.” None of us repents of sin perfectly so our hope is not in how well we repent. Augustine said in effect, “Even in my repenting there is that which I need to repent of.” Likewise for faith as the man in the gospel said, “Lord I believe, help my unbelief.” Jesus is the Savior who saves us in the midst of our weak and imperfect attempts at faith and repentance. I hope this helps and encourages you and others.

    Saved and Sustained by Grace,

    Dick
