World War 1 and Animals

I have always been interested in World War 1 but I was surprised to see so many animals that were used in that great conflict.

The movement of supplies and weapons during World War 1 was horses and mules. .  Mules and oxen were also used to pull heavy loads.  Germans used elephants to move timber.   Dogs were used to carry messages through battlefields with messages to officers behind the lines.  Dogs were also used by the Red Cross to carry medical equipment.  Dogs also pull machine guns to the front.  Carrier pigeons were used extensively to carry messages to officers behind the lines. They used camels in Africa in the Sudan.  They had gas masks for horses and men.  They used lab mice in submarines to let them know a fuel build up was present like bird in a coalmine.  Cats were just for pleasure for the soldiers.  Some soldiers brought dogs with them into battle.
